At 12:30 on September 30, Sohu founder, chairman and CEO Zhang Chaoyang shared the three hot topics in Chinese and English in the live broadcast room of Sohu Video Follower’s “Zhang Chaoyang’s English Class”: Six Flags in California is permanently closed, a former American music pastor cheated on his wife and killed his wife, and a female prisoner in Tennessee will be executed. Together with netizens, he learned English in the news and learned about the world.

The live broadcast first focused on an announcement from California’s Six Flags Magic Mountain amusement park. Zhang Chaoyang quoted BBC reports that the amusement park announced the permanent closure of its popular roller coaster project X2. This roller coaster seat, which can rotate 360 degrees, has been out of service since July this year. More than 100 passengers have previously filed lawsuits against the airline, claiming they suffered catastrophic brain injuries after taking the ride.
According to reports, the roller coaster originally opened in 2002 and was closed for repairs due to design flaws a few months later. In 2007, she reopened under the name X2 after replacing trains. So far, more than 16 million people have ridden the roller coaster. “Ride safety is a cornerstone of our business, and when we see guest confidence affected, we take it seriously,” the amusement park president said when announcing the closure.
Later, Zhang Chaoyang shared a shocking murder case. Caleb Flynn, a 40-year-old former Ohio music pastor who competed on the TV talent show “American Idol,” was found guilty of murder, Fox News reported. On February 16 this year, he shot his wife Ashley Flynn twice in the back of the head while she was sleeping, killing her, and then tried to blame the crime on an intruder.
After less than three hours of deliberation, the jury delivered a guilty verdict and found him guilty of eight counts, including aggravated murder and destruction of evidence. The trial revealed that Flynn had an extramarital affair with a church intern, and relevant text messages showed that he once wrote that he “just wanted her to die.” Prosecutors said he feared losing custody of his daughter, his job at his wife’s family business and his church position in a divorce. His defense attorney argued that evidence of infidelity does not amount to evidence of murder, saying that “Connecting a couple of meaningless dots doesn’t solve the case.”
Recently, an upcoming execution in Tennessee has attracted widespread attention. Zhang Chaoyang introduced that 50-year-old inmate Krista Pike will receive a lethal injection on Wednesday. In 1996, when she was only 18 years old, she was sentenced to death for torturing and murdering 19-year-old classmate Colin Slimer with her boyfriend. At the time of the crime, the victim’s chest was carved into one’s chest with a five-pointed star symbol related to the Satanic group. The case triggered a huge media frenzy.
Previously, Parker had denied carving the symbols himself. His lawyers argued that Pike was too young at the time of the murder to be sentenced to death for it. However, the U.S. Supreme Court denied his petition for a reprieve, and the governor refused to pardon him. If the execution goes ahead, she will be the first woman executed in Tennessee in more than 200 years.
