A netizen who signed up to climb Shimron Peak posted a screenshot of the chat in the group online. The person in charge, Mingma G, told everyone that an avalanche occurred at Shimron Base Camp, two chefs from the company lost contact, and the climbing activity was cancelled. This netizen told reporters that he was originally going to climb a mountain, but luckily he escaped: “They are still actively rescuing over there, and Mingma G is also participating in the rescue.”
Mingma G’s full name is Mingma Jiajie Sherpa. He is a well-known mountaineer in Nepal and a member of the International Union of Mountain Guides Association (IFMGA/UIAGM). He founded the Imagine Nepal Outdoor Adventure Company.
On September 3 this year, Imagine Nepal issued a notice for the 2026 Shimron expedition. The first phase is already full, and registration for the second phase has begun. The notice states: “Shimron Peak is 7,126 meters above sea level and is the safest 7,000-meter mountain in Nepal. The hiking route to Shimron Base Camp is also a beautiful highlight of this trip.”

On September 28, Imagine Nepal staff told reporters that on the afternoon of the 27th, an 8-person rescue team led by Mingma G had recovered the bodies of the two guides. They returned to a nearby village to rest in the evening and continued the search and rescue on the 28th. “There is no update yet, the frontline should be very busy.”
According to the Nepal National Mountain Guides Association (NNMGA) on September 27, a total of 14 kitchen employees and two mountain guides from different companies were missing. The two guides have been found, but they have died. Four members of the rescue team, including Mingma G, arrived at the accident scene by helicopter and began the search and rescue mission. The other four members were waiting at the airport, ready to be deployed at any time.

“Due to the weather, the helicopter can only wait. That location can only be accessed on foot or by helicopter.” L told reporters.
Shimron Peak is located at the junction of northern Nepal and the Tibetan border, between Manaslu Peak and the Annapurna Mountains. The terrain is dominated by mountains, glaciers, and snow slopes. The technical difficulty of this peak is moderate and suitable for high-altitude technical climbing training. As Nepal plans to introduce new regulations that “before climbing Mount Everest, climbers must have a 7,000-meter peak summit record,” Mount Shimron has become one of the most popular 7,000-meter peaks in recent years. The base camp is 4,920 meters above sea level and is close to the Tibetan border.

The price of climbing Mount Shimron is about 40,000 to 50,000 yuan, while the price of climbing Mount Everest is 40,000 to 500,000 yuan. “You can tell from the price that Mount Shimron is relatively simple,” L said.

However, there are very few resources for climbing 7,000 meters in Nepal. Before this, I had never heard of an avalanche happening here.” L said that in recent years, more and more climbers have set their sights on Shimron Peak. My company is also preparing to promote Shimron Peak next. There are not many Chinese people climbing Mount Shimron, most of them are from Europe, America and Southeast Asia.

Previously, the Nepal Hydrology and Meteorology Department had issued a weather forecast predicting heavy rainfall and snowfall in some areas of Nepal. According to relevant instructions, the issuance of entry permits to the Annapurna Conservation Area (ACA) and Manaslu Conservation Area (MCA) will be temporarily suspended from September 24 to 26, 2026 until further notice.

L told reporters that because passes need to be processed in advance, some mountaineering teams have already obtained passes in advance, and staff members entered the camp in advance before the 25th. “The missing people are mainly staff and pioneers, basically Sherpas.” L said that he had not heard of any Chinese being trapped because the mountaineering team had not gone yet.
“After heavy snowfall, the snow is relatively soft, and the probability of an avalanche is higher.” L said that the base camp where the avalanche occurred was not very high in altitude and was located at the bottom of a hillside. It was originally very safe, but the avalanche was an unforeseen disaster. “You can’t predict an avalanche, just like you never know when a rock on the mountain will roll down.” L said that the weather in the mountains is changeable, and the local microclimate is of little reference for climbing, unless it is a major climate trend like the Bengal Current. “The window period for mountaineering is very important, and you need to purchase satellite weather services.”
According to local regulations in Nepal, you must have a local Sherpa as a guide and apply for a mountaineering certificate when climbing high mountains. Although an avalanche occurred on Shimron Peak this time, L said that the local mountain will not be closed. “In Nepal, mountaineering is a pillar industry and a very mature industry. If the weather does not permit, mountaineering will be prohibited. Local guides will strictly enforce it, but the mountain will not be closed for this reason.” He admitted frankly that he will not recommend Shimron Peak this year, but he may still recommend it next year. “Just like there was a mountain disaster on Mount Manaslu a few years ago, it continues to be climbed every year, and many people still continue to climb.”
