Original: Global PC manufacturers have also entered the “misfortune competition”?

No one expected that in the third quarter of 2026, global sales dropped by more than 20%.

According to IDC data, global PC sales in the third quarter were only 62.7 million units, a year-on-year drop of 20.1%, 15.8 million units less sold, and a 9.1% month-on-month decline, which was the worst record in more than 10 years.

What’s even more interesting is that this time, the top five manufacturers have all declined, and none of them has grown. It depends on who has fallen worse. It has really entered the “misfortune competition”.

The picture above shows the sales changes of the top five manufacturers released by Counterpoint in the third quarter compared with the same period last year.

As you can see, Lenovo fell by 23%, HP fell by 31%, DELL fell by 25%, Apple fell by 11%, ASUS fell by 7%, and other brands fell by 16%. The total is 21%, which is similar to IDC’s data. It can be regarded as mutual verification of the correctness of each other’s data.

I don’t need to explain why computer sales have dropped so miserably. It’s all caused by memory chips. For computers, DDR memory and SSD hard drives are indispensable.

At present, whether it is memory or flash memory, the average price has increased four to five times, and the cost of a computer has increased by hundreds or thousands of yuan. Then manufacturers will inevitably increase prices, and then sales will naturally decline. After all, no matter who you are, whether you have money or not, you are naturally price-sensitive when buying things.

What makes these PC manufacturers even more anxious is that there is no intention to increase the price of memory chips in the future, and will continue to rise. Although the increase will not be as large as before, it is still rising.

The agency predicts that it will rise all the way until 2028, so the agency predicts that in the fourth quarter of 2026, global PC sales will set a new record, with an expected decline of 27%, and will fall to the bottom again. There will no longer be a so-called peak season.

Therefore, it is estimated that in the next quarter, there will be another “misfortune competition”. No one can perform well anyway, it just depends on who has the most misfortune, who is the worst manufacturer, and who has fallen relatively less, so it is not so miserable.
