Returning to the China Open after 11 years, the 39-year-old Djokovic wrote a new legend with his amazing winning streak and championship trophy.
On October 6, Beijing time, the men’s singles final of the China Tennis Open came to an end. The 39-year-old Serbian legendary player Novak Djokovic faced the Australian player De Minaur. After Djokovic won the first set, his opponent retired and finally won the China Open championship trophy for the seventh time.
So far, Djokovic has won all seven China Open events. Not only that, he also created an astonishing 34-game winning streak at the China Open, surpassing Nadal’s 31-game winning streak at the French Open and becoming the longest winning streak at the beginning of a single event in the Open era.
In the final, Djokovic and De Minaur played very close in the first set. After each secured serve, they entered a tie-break. The more experienced Djokovic defeated his opponent 7-3 in the tie-break and won the first set. However, there were some episodes during the game. De Minaur suffered an injury to his leg. He then used a medical timeout, but after returning to the game, he could not hold on after playing only one game and exited the game.
According to data, Djokovic won the final in just 1 hour and 22 minutes, setting a new record and becoming the oldest ATP Open champion since the event was restructured in 2009.

Looking back on Djokovic’s promotion journey, he defeated Borges in the first round, reversed Buyenkort in the second round, and defeated Zverev in the quarter-finals. Afterwards, when Djokovic was taking the lead against Medvedev, his opponent Medvedev was directly ruled to lose by the referee for hitting the spectator in the face.
Djokovic played for nearly 10 hours in the four games, which was still a considerable physical and psychological test for a veteran.
One data shows that De Minaur in the final is the 30th player Djokovic has encountered at the China Open, and 22 of them have retired. This data also proves that Djokovic is the “longest river” in the China Open men’s singles.

“The China Open in 2015 was a wonderful experience. It was also one of the best periods of my career. The whole of 2015 and the first six months of 2016 was probably the peak of my tennis career. I defeated Nadal here that year and won a very dominant victory, which left me with very good memories.” Jokovic also mentioned his past with the China Open, “Eleven years have passed and I have become a completely different player. This venue in Beijing has a special magic that always inspires me to move forward. I enjoy playing here very much, and the support given to me by the audience is amazing. I am looking forward to the finals.”
When talking about the future, Djokovic said: “As long as I stay healthy, I have proven many times that I can beat the world’s top players. I am not worried about my playing style or mentality. I just hope that the physical problems that bother me can be completely resolved, so participating in the Los Angeles Olympics will not be a problem.”
