Nearly half a century after it left Earth, Voyager 2 was quietly running out of power. Engineers on the ground had been tracking a steady decline in the radioisotope thermoelectric generator that feeds the probe, and the math had been getting worse: at the rate of consumption, key instruments would have had to be shut down one by one in the coming years.

Rather than accept the glide path, NASA engineers planned what they called the "Big Bang" — a single coordinated operation that simultaneously turned off power-hungry hardware and switched each subsystem to a lower-power alternative, while keeping the spacecraft warm enough to survive. Each additional year of data is a year of readings no other spacecraft has ever taken.

The episode is a useful lesson in how space missions are really run. Hardware is designed with generous margins, but those margins are not infinite. When engineers hit the wall, the answer is rarely a new part sent into space — it is a software rewrite, a reprioritization of what the hardware does, and the discipline to execute it once, flawlessly, across billions of miles.
