Rice Bran Compound Offers Natural Relief for Irritable Bowel Symptoms

A naturally occurring compound in rice bran, the outer layer removed during milling, may offer a new way to calm the overactive gut contractions that define irritable bowel syndrome.

Irritable bowel syndrome affects roughly 10 to 15 percent of the global population, yet treatment options remain limited. The condition is characterized by abdominal pain, bloating, and irregular bowel movements, often triggered by stress, certain foods, or hormonal changes. At the root of many symptoms is a gut that moves too fast or too slow — or both — because the smooth muscles lining the intestinal wall contract in an uncoordinated, overly forceful manner.

In a new study published in the journal ACS Food Science & Technology, researchers tested a series of natural compounds for their ability to calm these overactive contractions. Ferulic acid, a phenolic compound found in the cell walls of rice bran, stood out. When applied to intestinal muscle tissue in the laboratory, it significantly reduced the amplitude of muscle contractions without eliminating them entirely. The compound appears to work by blocking the flow of calcium ions into smooth muscle cells. Calcium is the trigger for muscle contraction, and by reducing the amount that enters the cell with each signal, ferulic acid dampens the force of the contraction without stopping the muscle from working.

The distinction matters. Many existing treatments for IBS work by affecting the nerves that control the gut, which can cause side effects like drowsiness, constipation, or dependence. Ferulic acid targets the muscle cells themselves, leaving the neural circuitry intact. This means it could potentially relieve the painful cramping of IBS without disrupting the normal coordination of digestion.

Rice bran is already known to be rich in fiber, vitamins, and antioxidants, and it has been studied for its effects on cholesterol, blood sugar, and inflammation. The new finding adds a specific mechanism to the list of health benefits associated with this common agricultural byproduct. Because rice bran is produced in massive quantities worldwide — roughly 50 million tons annually — the raw material for any future therapy is both cheap and readily available. The researchers caution that human clinical trials are still needed, but the identification of a specific molecular target for ferulic acid in gut muscle opens a clear path forward.
