Microplastics and nanoplastics — tiny synthetic particles smaller than five millimeters and microscopic, respectively — have now been detected in nearly every environment on Earth, from mountain snow to the deep ocean. A study published in the European Heart Journal takes that concern into a new place: the coronary blood supply that feeds the human heart. Among people who had suffered a serious heart attack, researchers found plastic particles in their coronary blood 84 percent of the time.
For comparison, the same particles showed up in only 40 percent of patients with chronic ischemic heart disease — people with narrowed heart arteries but no recent heart attack — and in 32 percent of control patients whose coronary arteries looked normal. The more severe the heart disease, the more often plastic particles were present. The team also found that smokers and people with heavier exposure to air pollution carried higher levels of the particles in their blood.
What the study does not claim is just as important as what it does. Detecting plastic particles next to damaged heart tissue is a correlation, not proof of a cause. The particles may contribute to inflammation, clotting, or plaque instability; they may simply accumulate more in already-stressed bodies; or they may travel through the bloodstream and lodge in the heart by chance. The researchers describe their finding as a strong association that deserves follow-up, not a verdict.
Still, the result sits alongside growing evidence that microplastics cross into the human body through food, water, and the air we breathe — including, now, the vessels feeding our most vital organ. It is a reminder that “small plastic” in the environment is not small when it reaches the bloodstream.
