LEDs Were Supposed to Save the Night Sky — Instead They Made Light Pollution Worse
The switch to light-emitting diodes was sold as a win for energy and the environment, but deployed as a wholesale replacement for old "dumb" bulbs, the technology has amplified light pollution — even as it holds the key to fixing it.
- Just a decade ago, LED streetlamps were rare. By 2019, more than half of U.S. streetlights were LEDs, and that figure is expected to top 90 percent by 2030.

The promise of the light-emitting diode was almost perfect. By converting electricity into light through semiconductors rather than heating a filament, LEDs waste little energy. Their solid-state construction means a lifespan measured in decades, cutting maintenance crews off cherry-pickers. Most powerfully, engineers can tune the exact color and intensity of the output — in theory, a lamp that is bright at rush hour and dim by midnight, or off during bird migration.
Most cities skipped the theory and simply swapped old fixtures for new, unshielded ones that blast light in every direction. The result is harsher nights, not softer ones. Excess light creates deep shadows, impairs vision, and gives the illusion of safety without the reality. CCTV cameras already perform well in low light, so blinding illumination helps no one — it just adds cost, glare and wasted photons climbing straight into the sky.
The fix is the technology itself. The Digital Addressable Lighting Interface protocol lets every lamp have its own network address and driver, turning streetlighting into software that can dim, schedule and respond.
