Historic Wildfires in France and Spain Force 330,000 to Evacuate

Across France and Spain, roughly 330,000 people have been forced to leave their homes and vacation sites as wildfires of exceptional scale continue to burn out of control. The fires, fueled by a prolonged drought and the fourth heatwave of the summer, have set grim records in western Europe, with flames advancing toward major cities including Bordeaux in southwestern France.

The crisis began in mid-July when a combination of record temperatures — exceeding 42°C in parts of Spain — and critically dry vegetation created conditions that firefighters described as unprecedented. Two major fire complexes in the Gironde region of France alone have burned more than 50,000 hectares, while separate fires in Spain's Extremadura and Castile and León regions have consumed additional tens of thousands of hectares.

The human toll

At the peak of the evacuations, more than 220,000 people had been displaced in the Gironde region alone, with an additional 110,000 in Spain. Emergency services established temporary shelters in sports halls, schools, and convention centers, while thousands of firefighters from across Europe — including reinforcements from Belgium, Germany, and Italy — were deployed to battle the flames. Two firefighters have died in Greece, which is also battling major fires.

Air quality has deteriorated sharply across the region, with smoke plumes drifting as far as Paris and the United Kingdom. Health authorities have issued warnings about particulate matter, advising vulnerable populations — including the elderly, children, and those with respiratory conditions — to remain indoors.

Climate context

Scientists have been unequivocal in linking the intensity of the 2026 European wildfire season to climate change. The extreme heat that has primed the landscape for combustion is occurring within a long-term warming trend that has made heatwaves more frequent, more intense, and longer-lasting across the continent.

"What we are seeing is consistent with climate model projections for a warming world," said a climate researcher at the University of Oxford. "The combination of record heat, prolonged drought, and large-scale fires is exactly the kind of extreme event that becomes more likely as global temperatures rise." The fires are expected to continue until significant rainfall arrives, which seasonal forecasts suggest may not happen for several more weeks.
