The Big One, Twice Over: How an Oregon Quake Could Wake the San Andreas

Sediment layers on the Pacific floor record that Cascadia's giant subduction quakes have, more than once, been followed almost immediately by San Andreas ruptures. The two fault systems are not neighbors that happen to be big — they are mechanically linked.

Most people think of the Cascadia "Big One" and California's San Andreas as two separate threats. A new round of marine-geology research shows the cleaner truth: they can behave as one chain reaction. When Cascadia slips, it redistributes tectonic stress along the North American plate. That added load propagates southward, concentrating precisely where the geometry of three colliding plates — Pacific, North American and Juan de Fuca — funnels it into the northern San Andreas. In seismology this is called stress triggering, and the data suggest a Cascadia rupture can push the northern San Andreas over the edge within minutes to hours.

The smoking gun is not a seismograph, because the historic record simply isn't long enough to catch a 900-year cycle. Instead, marine geologists recover it from the sea floor. Cascadia quakes collapse the continental slope in giant underwater landslides, dumping distinct sheets of debris down onto the abyssal plain. Each sheet is a timestamped record. By matching those sediment packages across the floor, researchers have identified layers where a Cascadia landslide is immediately followed by evidence consistent with a San Andreas rupture — the two events lined up in time, again and again through the last several thousand years.

Stress triggering is not one-way. The relationship runs in both directions: a large northern San Andreas event can, in principle, load Cascadia in return. That makes the pair a coupled system rather than two independent faults, with real implications for forecasting. If one moves, the other's odds rise sharply in the following window. The practical upshot is that preparedness for the Pacific Northwest cannot be siloed — a shaking scenario written for Oregon must also account for California, and vice versa.

Knowledge takeaway: Subduction quakes in Cascadia can transfer tectonic stress south along the North American plate and trigger the northern San Andreas near the Cape Mendocino triple junction. The record lives in timed sheets of underwater landslide debris on the sea floor, not in written history — and the linkage runs in both directions.
