200,000 Radioactive Barrels at the Bottom of the Atlantic — The Hunt Begins
Between 1946 and 1990, fourteen European countries deliberately dumped more than 200,000 barrels of radioactive waste into the depths of the Northeast Atlantic. The containers were sealed in concrete or bitumen and designed to last about 20 years. Every single one has now passed that expiration date.
A French-led scientific mission called NODSSUM (Nuclear Ocean Dump Site Survey and Monitoring) is now racing to locate and assess the condition of these barrels before their contents migrate into the marine food web.
The Search Underwater
The first phase of the project, conducted between June and July 2025, deployed an autonomous underwater robot named UlyX. At 4.5 meters long, the vehicle can dive to 6,000 meters depth. It cruised 70 meters above the abyssal plain, using high-resolution sonar to scan 165 square kilometers of seafloor. The robot pinpointed thousands of barrel locations, then dropped to within 10 meters of the seabed to photograph 50 specific barrels for structural analysis.
The barrels were found at depths between 3,000 and 5,000 meters, about 650 kilometers off the coast of Nantes, France — in international waters. The last successful monitoring attempt before this was in 1984, when the French submersible Epaulard photographed just six barrels.
Phase Two: Sampling the Danger
The second phase of the mission launched in May 2026, this time using the manned submersible Nautile. Unlike the automated survey, this phase uses mechanical arms to collect precise water, sediment, and deep-sea fish tissue samples directly adjacent to the corroded barrels. The goal is to measure exactly how far any escaping radioactive materials have traveled into the surrounding ecosystem.
The team collected over 300 samples in the first phase alone, including sediment cores and fish tissue, to establish a radiological baseline. A key challenge is separating any potential barrel leakage from historical background radiation — which includes fallout from 20th-century nuclear weapons testing, the Chernobyl disaster, and authorized runoff from coastal nuclear plants.
What's in the Barrels
The waste is classified as low to intermediate level: process sludge, contaminated metal, and laboratory equipment. About one-third of the material was tritium, which is considered relatively low-risk. The rest includes beta and gamma emitters that lose radioactivity over time, with about two percent being alpha radiation. However, some radionuclides remain a concern: Strontium-90 mimics calcium and can be absorbed by marine organisms, entering the food chain. Caesium-137 lasts about 30 years, while Plutonium-241 decays over roughly 13 years into Americium-241, which remains dangerous for centuries.
