Graduate-degree holders make up 17.4% of the high-exposure group, nearly four times the 4.5% in the zero-exposure group. His core work involves handling the gap between theory and experiment — hands-on, results-oriented work that AI cannot easily replicate.

Polarization in response: Australian National University economist Shen Kailing observes a clear polarization among students: one group strongly seeks to return to safe, traditional, protected environments like the civil service; the other is excited to experiment and break new ground. The official youth unemployment rate (ages 16-24, excluding students) hovers between 14% and 19%.

Why this matters: The 2026 graduate employment situation represents a structural shift, not a cyclical downturn. AI is not just automating tasks — it is changing the fundamental logic of entry-level hiring.
