A Catfish Cancer That Spreads Like a Parasite

For the first time, scientists have confirmed a contagious cancer in a fish — brown bullhead catfish across lakes in New England and Canada — and the tumor cells travel between hosts the way a parasite does, not the way a normal cancer does.

Cancer is, by definition, a disease of the body's own cells gone rogue. A tumor arises inside you and spreads only inside you. But in a handful of animal species, that rule has been broken. A tumor cell escapes one body, survives outside, and infects a second individual, where it grows as a foreign, living parasite. The most famous example is devil facial tumor disease, which has devastated wild Tasmanian devils, and a second cancer that spreads between domestic dogs.

Why this matters: Transmissible cancers have been found in only a few species and never before in fish. The discovery suggests the phenomenon may be far more common in nature than anyone expected — and raises questions about how tumor cells manage to cross the wall between bodies at all.

Anglers had noticed the problem first: brown bullhead catfish, pulling up from Lake Memphremagog between northern Vermont and southern Quebec, were covered in dark skin lesions. Some lakes have lost up to a third of their bullhead population. Researchers at the University of Vermont traced the pathology and sequenced whole genomes of tumor and healthy tissue from the same fish. The genetic signature confirmed it — the cancer is a single ancestral clone being passed directly from fish to fish.

A tumor that behaves like a parasite

What makes this case unusual is not just that it spreads, but how. The researchers found that the cancer spreads between fish by a mechanism they describe as resembling biting: an aggressive encounter transfers living tumor cells, which then take root in the victim's body. The cancer is not arising independently in each fish; one shared swarm of cells is jumping hosts the way a parasite does.

What it does — and does not — tell us about people

Human cancers are not contagious. The leap from a lab rat with a transplanted tumor to a virus that passes through a handshake is enormous; the human immune system is exceptionally good at recognizing and destroying foreign cells. But the fish cancer still offers a rare window into the early life of a transmissible tumor — how a single cell survives in a new body, evades defenses, and keeps multiplying. Understanding that process is valuable for oncology even where it has no direct bearing on patient care.
