31 New Deep-Sea Species Discovered Off Brazil in Just Two Weeks
In the vast, dark midwater zone of the ocean — the region between the sunlit surface and the seafloor — a team of international researchers has made a remarkable discovery: 31 new species, identified in just 14 days of exploration.
The expedition, led by the Schmidt Ocean Institute aboard the research vessel Falkor (too), focused on the tropical South Atlantic off the coast of Brazil. Using the remotely operated vehicle SuBastian, scientists explored the midwater ecosystem at depths of 200 to 1,000 meters — a zone often described as the least understood habitat on Earth. Among the finds were nine new species of jellyfish, multiple types of comb jellies (ctenophores), new species of worms, and giant single-celled organisms known as xenophyophores.
One of the expedition's most striking observations was a pelagic octopus captured on video attacking and consuming a red jellyfish — a rare glimpse into predator-prey dynamics in the open ocean. The team also documented a variety of bioluminescent creatures, including species that produce light in wavelengths and patterns previously unknown to science.
The speed of the discoveries was made possible by combining advanced imaging tools with real-time genomic sequencing. The scientists used specialized camera systems that allow researchers to see and capture delicate gelatinous animals without damaging them, which is nearly impossible with traditional net sampling.
These findings are significant because the midwater zone plays a crucial role in the global carbon cycle. Many of the creatures living there migrate vertically each night to feed near the surface, transporting carbon to deeper waters. Understanding this ecosystem is essential for predicting how the ocean will respond to climate change.
