The Hum: Why Millions Hear a Noise No One Else Can

A low rumble reported on every continent has frustrated investigators for fifty years. The latest research points the search inward.

Picture this: it is the middle of the night. You hear a faint, engine-like drone. You check the windows, listen for traffic, hunt for a generator or a fridge compressor. Nothing. And the person beside you in bed hears absolutely nothing at all. Welcome to "The Hum."

The phenomenon — a persistent low-frequency buzzing, humming or droning noise — has been reported worldwide since the 1970s, when residents of Bristol, England first flooded local newspapers with letters. Since then it has appeared in coastal towns across the UK, in Taos, New Mexico, in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and beyond. Surveys suggest only a small fraction of the population can hear it, which is partly why sufferers often feel dismissed or go mad looking for a machine that does not exist.

Why the source is so hard to find

Low-frequency sound behaves unlike the everyday noises we are used to. Its long wavelengths travel great distances, bend around buildings, and are extremely difficult to pinpoint. That physical property has kept the mystery alive for half a century. With no obvious source to be found, theories have ranged from industrial fans, traffic, electrical infrastructure and wind turbines to ocean waves, atmospheric effects and even more imaginative speculations. Yet no single external source has ever explained the reports.

Three hypotheses, tested

Researchers from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) studied twenty-eight people in Germany who regularly heard an unexplained humming or buzzing. They examined the three leading explanations in turn:

1. Exceptional low-frequency hearing. Most participants had normal hearing; only two showed unusually good sensitivity at certain low frequencies. So this hypothesis does not hold for most people, though narrow, hard-to-test windows of sensitivity cannot be entirely ruled out.

2. The ear itself is making the sound. The inner ear (the cochlea) can generate faint sounds called spontaneous otoacoustic emissions — normal byproducts of how the ear amplifies incoming sound. Testing found no evidence that this accounts for most cases.

3. A form of low-frequency tinnitus. Tinnitus is usually thought of as a high-pitched ringing, but it can also take the form of buzzing, roaring or a deep hum. Crucially, low-frequency tinnitus mimics the character of environmental sounds — a distant engine, a subsonic vibration — making it easy to mistake as something heard from outside.

An inside job, not an outside one

The team's strongest conclusion is that many cases of The Hum are not caused by an external machine at all, but are a low-frequency form of tinnitus — a sound perception generated within the auditory system itself. That helps explain why the noise is louder indoors and at night, when background noise drops away and attention shifts to subtle sounds, and why other people in the same room hear nothing.

It is an important distinction, not just for curiosity's sake. If The Hum is largely an internal phenomenon, it shifts the response from environmental engineers hunting a hidden source to clinicians and patients working with the nervous system that produces the perception. The mystery of the worldwide hum may, finally, have the kind of answer medicine can actually do something with.
