How Regular Sauna Use May Help Prevent Alzheimer's, Stroke and Depression
A growing body of evidence suggests that the controlled heat stress of a sauna session triggers cellular responses that protect the brain, strengthen the heart and stabilise mood — making it one of the most accessible preventive health tools available.
For most people, a sauna is a place to relax after a workout or a cold winter day. But researchers are increasingly convinced that the experience of sitting in an 80°C room for 15 minutes does something far more profound: it activates a cascade of biological defence mechanisms that may keep the brain and heart healthy for decades.

Cardiovascular benefits that protect the brain
The cardiovascular system also benefits. A sauna session raises heart rate to levels comparable with moderate exercise, improving cardiac output and arterial flexibility. Over time, this reduces blood pressure and improves circulation to the brain. Large Finnish cohort studies have found that people who take a sauna four to seven times per week have a 60 percent lower risk of stroke and a 50 percent lower risk of developing dementia compared with those who use a sauna only once a week.
Mood regulation and depression
The link to depression appears to involve both psychological and physiological pathways. The warmth and relaxation of a sauna session stimulate the release of endorphins and reduce cortisol levels, producing a measurable improvement in mood. A 2023 randomised trial found that participants with depression who took twice-weekly sauna sessions reported significantly lower depression scores after eight weeks compared with a control group. The heat also triggers the release of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a protein that supports the growth of new neurons and is often deficient in people with depression.
How much is enough?
The benefits appear to be dose-dependent. Finnish studies suggest that two to three sessions per week, each lasting 10 to 20 minutes at 80–100°C, produce measurable protective effects. The key is consistency: the body's adaptive response to heat stress builds up over time, and the neuroprotective and cardiovascular benefits accumulate with regular use.
