Lambs Born From Immature Eggs: A Major IVF Breakthrough

A research team has produced healthy lambs from eggs that were not yet mature when collected — a laboratory trick that could eventually boost human IVF success rates.

Scientists grew the immature eggs in a carefully controlled lab environment until they finished maturing — mimicking, in a dish, the final stages of natural development.

From dish to lamb

The fertilised eggs were then transferred into surrogate mothers and carried to term. The result was a litter of healthy lambs, with at least one going on to produce two healthy offspring of her own — strong evidence that the resulting animals were fertile and biologically normal. The work was reported in the July 2026 issue of New Scientist and has drawn attention as one of the most convincing animal demonstrations of in-vitro egg maturation yet.

What this could mean for people

It is a long way from lamb to human babies, and the technique still has years of safety and refinement work ahead. But the path it opens is real. Many patients who start IVF have at least some immature eggs — eggs that are normally discarded. A reliable way to mature them in the lab could turn wasted eggs into viable embryos, raising the number of usable eggs per cycle and the chance of success for people facing low egg counts or poor egg quality.

If the approach translates to human practice, the message is reassuring: even the eggs we currently treat as unusable may, one day, be a viable path to a pregnancy.
