Insects Have a Hidden Body Clock for Humidity — Just Like the One That Tracks Daylight

Almost every animal on Earth, from humans to fruit flies, runs on a circadian clock that syncs to the 24-hour day using light. That clock sets sleep, hormone release, and body temperature. But University of Cincinnati scientists have now shown that insects also carry a second, parallel rhythm — one tuned not to sunlight, but to the moisture in the air.

1. A body clock that reads humidity, not light — Researchers led by Professor Joshua Benoit found that fruit flies and other insect species possess an internal biological clock that keeps track of daily humidity cycles. Just as a photic clock aligns to sunrise and sunset, this humidity clock lets an insect anticipate when the air will be damp or dry — and behave accordingly, even without any light cue.

2. Why the discovery matters — Circadian rhythms are one of the most fundamental processes in biology, influencing everything from metabolism to behavior. Finding a humidity-driven clock means insects can stay synchronized to their environment even when light is absent — in leaf litter, underground, or on overcast days. The work, published in npj Biology, opens a new window on how small organisms read and adapt to their surroundings.

3. A practical angle for pest control — If insects rely on humidity cues to time their activity, then disrupting or out-of-sync moisture cycles could throw off their feeding, mating, and emergence patterns. Understanding these hidden clocks could one day help scientists design smarter timing for crop protection, mosquito control, and the management of invasive species.
