Oxygen is disappearing from oceans, lakes, rivers, and coastal waters at an alarming rate. Scientists warn this overlooked crisis — aquatic deoxygenation — could push the planet into an unsafe space from which recovery may take centuries.

The study, published in Limnology and Oceanography, describes how warming waters, nutrient pollution, and changes in ocean circulation are draining oxygen from aquatic ecosystems worldwide.

2. A cascade of planetary consequences — When oxygen levels fall, the effects ripple through food webs from microscopic plankton to fish and marine mammals. Even air-breathing species suffer as their prey shifts or disappears. The researchers argue that aquatic deoxygenation should be formally added to the Planetary Boundaries framework — the set of nine environmental processes that define a safe operating space for humanity.
