Amazon Is Building Its Own AI Chips for the Devices You Already Own

Amazon is moving beyond renting AI power from data centres and is instead designing its own custom silicon for the smart speakers, streaming boxes and everyday gadgets sitting in your home.

Why a cloud company is making its own chips

In a July 2026 interview, Panos Panay — Amazon's chief of devices and services, the former head of Microsoft's Surface line — laid out a hardware strategy that many had not expected from the company that built the Alexa voice assistant and the Kindle. Amazon, he said, is now building "end-to-end silicon" for its most important consumer devices, including Echo smart speakers and Fire TV streaming sticks.

For years, consumer electronics relied on processors designed by outside chip companies such as Qualcomm, Broadcom and MediaTek. That model works fine for basic features, but it struggles with the newest kind of artificial intelligence. On-device generative AI — the language models behind upgraded voice assistants, smart photo editing and real-time scene understanding — needs hardware tuned specifically for the workload.

The shift in one line: Amazon wants its AI features to run fast and private on the device itself, rather than shuttling your voice and camera data to the cloud for every interaction.

What custom silicon buys you

When a company designs its own chip for a product it also sells, it can optimise every layer of the system. The processor can be sized exactly to fit a small speaker or a thin streaming stick, saving power and space. It can include specialised blocks for AI that general-purpose chips lack, making language and image tasks run in milliseconds instead of seconds. And, crucially for privacy, the most sensitive processing — recognizing your voice or analysing a photo — can stay on the device where it cannot be intercepted in transit.

Apple took this path first with its A-series and M-series chips for iPhones, iPads and MacBooks, and the performance gains are now widely visible. Amazon appears to be following a similar playbook, but starting with the lower-cost, always-on devices that form its smart-home ecosystem.

A broader bet on invisible AI

Panay also hinted that Amazon's real ambition is not to repeat another smartphone launch, but to make AI so embedded in household devices that you barely notice it. A speaker that anticipates a question, a TV that edits video in real time, a portable gadget powered by the same local AI — these are the kinds of products the devices chief teased. Amazon's strategy is to become the infrastructure behind everyday intelligence, quietly layering custom chips into every product that needs one.
